On Oil and Olives

The olive tree is among the oldest known cultivated trees in the world, native to Asia Minor and spread from Iran, Syria and Palestine to the rest of the Mediteranean Basin thousands of years ago.

Olives have been found in Egyptian tombs from 2000 BC.

The use of olive oil and references to olive trees is found in many cultures and religions. Bible scriptures and classical writings mention olive oil as a symbol of goodness and purity and the tree representing peace and happiness.

The olive has spread to North and South America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia in the last several hundred years.
